Canadian Fountain

I just interviewed the artist Rebecca Belmore, who is representing Canada at the Venice Biennale. Her piece is called Fountain; in it, she created a waterfall, and a short, rear-projected video loop casts images through the waterfall and onto the floor and visitors. The video, shot by my friend Noam Gonick, shows Belmore struggling out of the water (Iona Beach off Vancouver) with a bucket and throwing a bucket of blood directly at the camera….and hence onto the waterfall. A reflection on what we are doing to nature, to water, and a reflection on First Nation’s history, given Italy’s history of European explorers.
